Private carrier Kingfisher Airlines hopes to fly to international destinations by mid 2007, once it receives delivery of Airbus A-330 wide-bodied aircraft.
With three more leased wide-bodied aircraft in its fleet, Air-India would launch daily flights from New Delhi to Hong Kong and then connect Seoul and Osaka, along with two flights a week to Shanghai from July 7.
The government on Thursday said the issue of an initial public offering of Air-India and Indian Airlines was at a preliminary stage of discussion.
Air India on Tuesday signed agreements with Airbus and Boeing for acquiring 470 planes for an estimated $70 billion at list prices. The Tata group may have to deploy upwards of $1 billion to improve the airline's passenger reservation system, upgrade and refurbish Air India's fleet, primarily the wide-body aircraft which are the mainstay for the airline's international operations, people in the know said. Seeking to expand fleet as well as operations, the airline has placed orders for acquiring a total of 840 aircraft that includes an option to buy 370 planes. Currently, Air India has around 1,600 pilots to operate its 113 aircraft fleet and in recent times, there have been instances of ultra-long haul flights getting cancelled or delayed due to shortage of crew.
